Principles of Social Media Recap

As a marketing major taking Principles of social media was extremely beneficial. Although most of the world's population uses some form of social media not everyone knows what goes on behind scenes and what all the platforms have to offer. With how much social media as a whole has grown it is nice to truly learn about it and what it all has to offer.      Throughout this semester we have examined the main forms of social media such as, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. We learned when the best and worst times are to post on each app, the biggest age group on the platform, and how a business can utilize the platform for its benefit. Along with that we got to see where each form of social media is most popular, and which gender uses it more. Needless to say, there is a lot of information to be discussed when it comes to each social media platform. Aside from social media we also discussed the importance of personal branding ...

And the Spring Semester Comes to an End

The semester is finally coming to an end, as I only have one final exam and one last presentation to give. This is a very bittersweet moment for me as it was my first semester back after taking a leave of absence last semester. I truly cannot put it into words how this all makes me feel. I know people might say, "You still have three semesters left" or "You're not even graduating yet." Although those statements are both very true, however, during my leave of absence I went through a lot of ups and downs. I didn't know what I wanted to do, from if I wanted to come back to Ohio Northern, to if I even wanted to come back to college in general. I had various discussions with my parents, grandparents, and friends. There were tons to think at about but only one answer.       I knew I was going to come back to Ohio Northern and finish what I started; especially since I have put tons of money towards it. I knew I needed to take things step by step ...

The Social Dilemma

Let me introduce to you The Social Dilemma , a documentary that goes into the depths of the problems the world is facing with technology and social media. A compelling insight on the risks of addiction, mental health disorders when using social media.      Throughout the documentary it explores and dives into explaining how social media companies use algorithms in order to track their user's behavior and increase engagement. Former Facebook engineer Justin Rosenstein goes into depth how users are being sold to advertisers, and in a way, users are selling their attention away to them. Then Tristan Harris a former Google design ethicist goes in to explaining the addiction to social media platforms and the similarity it has between Vegas slot machines which are primarily designed to keep and maintain one's attention.      Another main topic that is focused on throughout the documentary is how misinformation has spread globally through thes...

The Week before Dead Week

We have finally made it to the last few weeks of the spring semester! As dead week approaches us next week there is so much work and fun to have. This week classes are wrapping up their last few chapters and taking one more exam before finals week. It is hard to believe how fast this semester has come and gone.      For me personally this week has been filled with finishing up projects to be ready to present next week, and of course exams. This week I only had three exams which is not bad by any means however it was rough having two on the same day. On Wednesday I had both Principles of Marketing and Legal Environment exams and today I have Principles of social media. On the bright side after my exams on Wednesday I went and grabbed ice cream with my best friend and her boyfriend at Whippy Dip. Then after that I went back to the library to study and work on some last-minute homework assignments. Following that I left Ada to go to Lima around 7:30 to g...

Social Media's connection with Mental Health

Is there a connection between social media and mental health? The answer to that question is yes and as technology grows and social media platforms progress the more individuals are aware of the connection.      On a personal level I have first-hand come to realize how social media can affect one's mental health. I remember when I first got on social media, I was constantly comparing myself to other females on the platform and wished that I could look like how they did. Then I was fixated on how many likes I got on each of my posts. Social media was destroying my mental health and self-esteem day in and day out. I would constantly look at my phone to see if I had any notifications from someone trying to follow me or liking one of my posts. However, I made changes and over the years since then I have made sure to take time away from social media by completely deleting my accounts and refocusing in on me when I started to feel the negative impact again. Social media ...

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is very important to my family and especially important to me. It marks the day Jesus Christ is resurrected from the dead. It shows his unwavering love us all and the sacrifice through this time. For me Easter Sunday is more than just seeing family and getting baskets full of essentials I need or candy that I truthfully do not need. It is a time to truly stand still and think about what all Jesus has done for me personally and everyone in the world.      To follow with that on Easter Sunday I started my day off by going to church and worshipping god. Then I continued my day by going home and helping my six-year-old sister search for all eighty eggs the easter bunny had placed all around our house. Then once we finally found all of them, we sat and opened our easter baskets which were filled with all sorts of goodies. As the day continued my dad, stepmom, little sister and I headed over to my great grandma's house to have lunch and allow ...

Marketing With TikTok

TikTok was founded in 2016 and created as a social media platform for short videos. TikTok has become one of the fastest growing media apps with having 100 million users within the first year and 1.56 billion users in 2024. Now, TikTok has become all the rage with constant dance trends and so much more and has even been brought up in the political world for security reasons. Needless to say, TikTok has grown substantially and is a wonderful way to market your business.   TikTok is primarily used by individuals ages 18 to 24 with males leading by 52% of the app’s users. Since 2016 TikTok has grown to be the 5th most popular social media platform. On this platform 38% of users have college degrees and or some form of college experience. Users on the app typically spend 95 minutes per day and around 34 hours per month. Now that is a lot of time spent on one social media app which is great for content creators and businesses. Following that the best days to post on t...
