Principles of Social Media Recap

As a marketing major taking Principles of social media was extremely beneficial. Although most of the world's population uses some form of social media not everyone knows what goes on behind scenes and what all the platforms have to offer. With how much social media as a whole has grown it is nice to truly learn about it and what it all has to offer.      Throughout this semester we have examined the main forms of social media such as, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. We learned when the best and worst times are to post on each app, the biggest age group on the platform, and how a business can utilize the platform for its benefit. Along with that we got to see where each form of social media is most popular, and which gender uses it more. Needless to say, there is a lot of information to be discussed when it comes to each social media platform. Aside from social media we also discussed the importance of personal branding ...

Then Tristan Harris a former Google design ethicist goes in to explaining the addiction to social media platforms and the similarity it has between Vegas slot machines which are primarily designed to keep and maintain one's attention.      Another main topic that is focused on throughout the documentary is how misinformation has spread globally through thes...

Social Media's connection with Mental Health

Is there a connection between social media and mental health? The answer to that question is yes and as technology grows and social media platforms progress the more individuals are aware of the connection.      On a personal level I have first-hand come to realize how social media can affect one's mental health. I remember when I first got on social media, I was constantly comparing myself to other females on the platform and wished that I could look like how they did. Then I was fixated on how many likes I got on each of my posts. Social media was destroying my mental health and self-esteem day in and day out. I would constantly look at my phone to see if I had any notifications from someone trying to follow me or liking one of my posts. However, I made changes and over the years since then I have made sure to take time away from social media by completely deleting my accounts and refocusing in on me when I started to feel the negative impact again. Social media ...

Social Media Workshop

Last Friday I got the opportunity to attend my first Social Media Workshop. Now although I did need to attend as it is part of my social media grade, I don't want to look at it that way. It is a way to be able to learn about new skills that will help me in my future career. The day was set up with everyone attending first meeting in the ballroom to hear from speaker Jason Therrien who is the founder of Thunder::Tech. To start off the day he gave an amazing presentation on how far long social media has come and what direction it is currently heading in. After his presentation the rest of the presentations where is two different rooms and you got to choose which room you wanted to go during that time. Overall, it was an amazing day and lots to learn.      Now as I said before our first speaker of the day was Jason Therrien and I am going to go deeper into what he presented. Right now, we all know that there is TikTok, Instagram, X which used to be Twitter, You...

Marketing With Snapchat

Snapchat has become younger generations especially ages 18-24 daily communication app. With snapchat having the chat feature younger generations are more drawn to use this app as their way to text whoever they want. Not only that but it allows individuals to be able to send snap which basically are either photos or videos. It has gained more and more popularity over the years.  Snapchat was thought of by three Stanford University students who wanted to create an app with disappearing photos. Currently Evan Spiegel is the CEO and the last of the remaining founders still involved with the company. Flash forward to today, there are more than 406 million people that use snapchat daily and 750 million people monthly that are using snapchat to create over 4 billion snaps each day. In popularity ranking's Snapchat lands at the 10th spot for the social media platform.  Now let's discuss how Snapchat can be used from a marketing perspective. Exam Week

This week in Principles of Social - Media we had a review day for our first Exam in the class. Review days are always the best especially when it is the first exam because it allows you to get a feel for how questions will be set up on the exam and what kind of answers being expected.      The exam will be over chapters one through six and chapter twelve. These chapters contain information on various topics from, blogs, to marketing with Instagram. Throughout the chapters various amounts of data sets are provided to show us when and who are using certain social media apps. From the gender that uses it the most, to when are the best and worst times to post. Another topic provided in the chapters in how to set business accounts on each of the social media platforms and what are the key features to include into your profile. We also learned what certain features are on the social media platforms and how to best use them to our advantage. Following with that we also ha...

Podcast Week

Social Media Interview     This week we had to interview an expert on the topic of social media. However, we didn't just have to interview them, but we had to do it in podcast form. Before this class I had never made a podcast, nor have I ever thought about making one. On the bright side it was an amazing opportunity to learn technology skills and I faced it head on. I learned one how to record just audio which sound simple enough but there's a lot of aspects that need to be taken account. Then I had to insert the audio into Pod Bean and of course do a little snipping and editing of the audio to try and make it sound better. Now it's no professional podcast but I am proud of how it turned out.      Following with that I had to interview an expert in social media. I chose to interview one of my friends who is now a Graduate student at Northern Illinois University. For his bachelor's he studied Communications and Journalism so I knew he would be a perfect f...

Chapter 1

In Chapter 1 there are various things that should be no surprise to us as students given the generation that we have grown up in. For example, the advancement in both technology and social media that has occurred over our lifetime is tremendous. It is no new information to us as we have been here to live through it all. Not only that but also how far along AI has come and being able to use it in beneficial ways such as Chat GPT. Lastly, another thing that should take no one by surprise is how much social media plays a major part when it comes to marketing. From the ads we see as scrolling through Instagram and all social media platforms, to the commercials we see when watching tv (if you still have regular tv streaming such as DirectTV, YouTube TV, ect.). Marketing aspects in social media are everywhere we look when on our phones.      Now let me switch gears and explain the things that did shock me while reading Chapter 1. When looking over what plat...
